Interior Design

Painting is one of those tasks that, despite the large amount of time involved, the setup, the expense and the hazard of doing it wrong, remains one of the most fun ways to improve one's home. Color is one of the primal means of human expression. Almost everyone has a favorite color and if anyone is asked what their ideal home looks like the color is usually among the first things described. Interior design need not be done by a trendy professional who charges thousands of dollars. The task is quite enjoyable and, provided one has a good eye, is not particularly difficult.

Homeowners often err on the side of being too conservative with their color choices and, thus, end up with a boring house and a sense that they've gotten little for their investment of time and money. One should not be afraid to get a little wild with their paint choices. Consider multiple colors in one room, even stripes, if it suits one's tastes. Bold colors can liven up a dark room and dark colors can make a room that is too big and cold-feeling seem more warm and intimate. Interior design starts with the colors chosen, so be sure you consider how a room is to be furnished when choosing colors.

One should also give attention to texture as much as they do paint. A wall can be textured via several different techniques involving spackles, sponges and other devices that add some relief to a wall. Combined with the right colors, this can give the appearance of rough stone, adobe or other exotic building materials. A house in the Midwest need not be bereft of southwestern flair if that is what the homeowner desires. Likewise, the most common tract home can be made into an exotic abode with the right color choices.

Homeowners who do their own interior design allow themselves to invest a bit more personality into their homes. They also save huge amounts of cash. Not only is hiring interior designers expensive, it amounts to hiring another individual to make their best approximation of the homeowner's tastes. Not even the most skilled designer really knows what a homeowner likes and dislikes. Only the homeowner themselves knows for sure and there is absolutely no reason any homeowner should feel intimidated out of choosing the look of their environment themselves. It all starts with the right colors!
